I am new to Maine genealogy and am trying to research a man that came to Maine before Feb 1860. He was born in England and I have no idea when he came here. That is my main research block...when he came here. Does anyone know what major ports of entry are around Maine that I should check? This man married a woman from Maine in NH, right on the border by Kittery. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

The first thing you need to do is find all the records you can in the US that relate to their lives... .census, deaths, obituaries, marriages, etc. One of these records might point you to the correct place in England. If they are on the 1900 census, it might tell the year of immigration and if they were naturalized. If there were naturalized, the naturalization record (in Waltham at the National Archives) might have the place of birth!!! good luck. |

I am trying to find information on the William Knowlton family ancestors. Captain Knowlton imigrated to Nova Scotia about 1642. The next info I have is about family in Portland Maine in 1814. |
