Family tradition says that my greatgrandparents, who emigrated to the US from England/Wales, arrived at Portland, Maine, on New Year's Day of 1872. Where could I find passenger arrival records? I assume that the National Archives has them, but in which repository--Boston? Are the records available in Portland somewhere? The surname was Burgum: Anthony Thomas, his wife Ann Harper, and 6 children: William H., Tom Owen, Joseph, Annie, Edith and Clara.

If you have a subscription to ancestry.com that should help. Otherwise, a good place to go is your local Family History Center. My ancestors came into Ellis Island and the FHC was very helpful in finding the passenger manifest for me and I got a copy.

You can find Portland, ME passenger lists at the National Archives branch in Waltham, MA, at the Maine State Archives, or you can order the films to rent for a month if you join HeritageQuest.com

There are a few passenger list records on microfilm at the Portland Public Library.
They are stored with the microfilmed newspapers in the media room, basement level of the library.

Good Luck!

Is there a way to find out members of regiments or troops made up of Downeast Maine colonists during the French and Indian War?
