Am looking for the father of Hannah Carlisle, b. about 1770, married John Plaisted. Believe she was the daughter of Alexander Carlisle of York as her children were named after Alexander and his wife Molly. |

Is there any way to know if your Hannah is a descendant of the Joseph Carlile who appears in York in the mid to late 1600's, married 1. Elizabeth Bean and 2. Rachel Maine (Preble?)1695 |

If I can connect Hannah with Alexander and Molly I believe there would be a connection to Joseph Carlile. |

We are trying to follow a hunch - we know this isn't really good research but it's so early in the history of the area that there are no solid records and it is entirely possible. A Joseph Kerly b. 1669 in Lancaster, MA, son of Capt. Henry and 1st wife Elizabeth White Kerly, may have survived the Lancaster Massacre of 1676 in which his mother and an older brother William were slain, and been taken to Rowlandson or Josselyn ministry relatives then in Marlborogh, MA, who in turn may have brought him to York where he grew to manhood, married and raised a family. Another brother of Joseph was known to have been a Bartholomew Kerley, and some of his children later also used the Carlile/Carlisle spelling. The names of William and John were used often in Kerly/Kerley/Carley/Carlile and other spellings of the family name, and there was a later (1703) marriage between a William Carley of Marlborough/Boston and a Mary Bowden of Saco/Black Point, York. This William would have been a half brother to Joseph through the second marriage in 1677 of Capt. Henry to Elizabeth Ward, widow of John Howe, Jr. Ambrose, Abraham and Alexander were all names that appear in the Bowden lines, (the Bowdens were first in Saco in the 1640's). These names then became introduced into the Carlile/etc lines. We realize that we may be grasping at straws here, but we are looking at any and all possible connectors between the Kerly and Carlile families that we come across. If you think there might be some meat in these bones, please let us know. Thanks for responding. |

Did find the death dates for Alexander Carlisle and Margery (wife). Alexander d. York 13 April 1792 and Margery d. York 28 December 1793. Does anyone have access to probate records for that period? Would love to see if Hannah Plaisted is listed as a daughter. |

Has anyone found the probate records for Alexander Carlisle (d. 13 Apr 1792 in York) or his wife, Margery (d. 28 Dec 1793 York)? Information I have seen is that they had a daughter, Mary, born in 1778. I am trying to find out their Mary could be my Mary Carlisle, b. 23 Nov 1779 "Of Old York, Maine" who was married 23 Nov 1799 to Nathaniel Gould (Goold) by the Rev. Josiah Winship, Woolwich Church, Maine. The Rev. Josiah Winship also married a Joseph Carlisle to Lucinda Williams on February 26, 1795 and I have seen information that lists Joseph Carlisle, b. 1772, as a son of Alexander Carlisle and his wife, Margery. The Mary Carlisle who married Nathaniel Gould is my 4th Great Grandmother. |
