I am looking for information on Phoebe Murphy Doughty; my gggrandmother. She married Levi Doughty and gave birth to my GGgrandmother Phoebe Alice Doughty. They were all residents of Long Island(Portland)Maine.
I cannot find any information on her birth family. I have tried differant permutations of her name(including soundex)but am worried that I am overlooking something on the basis of misspelling(my Ggrandmother's name appears on her Marriage Certificate as Phoebe Ellis(Alice spelt phoenetically I assume). I have even tried typing in the name Phebe; a common misspelling. Does anyone out there have there have this lady in their lists and can they point me in the right direction.

Levi Doughty was on Long Island with his parents William and Susan for the 1850 and 1860 federal census. Phebe Murphy was on Long Island in 1860 at age 18 in the household of George and Lois Butler and their children George and Albion Butler. For 1850 George and Lois (Louisa?) with their children George and Albion were on Black Island in Hancock County and with them is 8 year old Phebe Murphy. Possible scenarios---Phebe was born to Lois by a previous marriage---Phebe was born out of wedlock to Lois---the Butler's took in a relative----the Butler's took in a foster child. Exploring Black Island in Hancock County might offer leads on Murphy and Butler families....see Charles B. McLane's Islands of the Mid-Maine Coast: Blue Hill and Penobscot Bays.
