Is there a record of those who left Maine?

My great grandfather James Nelson Gilman b. 1836 Farmington/New Sharon was in the Gold Country of California in 1863. Returned to Farmington/New Sharon and moved to South Dakota in 1884. Was such movement recorded anywhere?

The only thing that pops into my mind immediately is to check any census records...if you are trying to validate that he did live in the places you mentioned during the times you mentioned.

My grandfather Joseph Holmes Robinson left Fairfield, Maine sometime in 1909. I would like to know if he went to Boston, Mass.

The 1880 federal census at Familysearch enables one to put in a surname and the state of birth and it will search all states or specific states. You can do the same on Ancestry with the 1870 and some other census years. The first source is free, the second is not.
