I am gathering information on the Jedediah and Levi Varney family of Lowell, Maine. Jedediah helped to establish Lowell in the early 1800s and established a homestead on Varney Ridge. His son, Levi, lived with his wife Lydia Page on Varney Ridge until his death in 1880. His children include Eva, Marcia, Adelia, Lynnie, James, Grace, Levi Jr. and John. Their daughter Abbie E. married Charles W. Hovey from Boiestown, NB, in 1872 in Burlington, Maine. The 1880 census shows Charles and Abbie Hovey (mispelled "Honey")living nearby on Varney Ridge. Children include Linnie, Herbert and Annie. Herbert married Iva Lancaster and lived in Milo Maine. His son, Earl Varney, is my grandfather. I believe several of Levi's siblings relocated to Anoka, MN. Levi, Jr. lived with his family in Lagrange, Maine. If you have any information about this line of Varneys and Hoveys, I look forward to hearing from you. peter_hovey@att.net |

I have research showing Charles and Abbie Hovey living in Bangor Maine through the 1880s, until 1892. The Bangor City Directory shows them moving around to several addresses. They eventually seperated and were divorced in 1892. Abbie and Annie moved to Catskill NY were they worked as domestic help in "the Sibley Mansion" as stated in the 1900 census. Abbie eventually remarried Marriner Hillman and moved to New Hampshire. Lydia Varney is shown living with them in 1920. Annie married William Stroub and operated an inn in Catskill. |
