I am in search of details from letters, notes, memoirs ships records, etc of captain Sanders Curling of Thomaston Maine from the mid 1800's. A ship called the S. Curling, built by Edward O'Brien was launched in 1854 at Thomaston. Also looking for details of the launch and the ship. |

Shelley, I have done some research on sailing vessels through the Bath Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, Maine. They are located on Washington Street Just below Bath Iron Works. I found them to be very helpful. I'm sure a visit or telephone call will produce the results you need. Good luck! |

Hi Shelly, Captain Sanders Curling was my great great great grandfather. He was part owner and captain of the of the S. Curling. Edward O'Brien built the ship and was also part owner as was Samuel Watts. The S. Curling was the first ship that Edward O'Brien built in Thomaston. My ggggrandfather owned and captained the ship from 1855-1859 (per records of Sam'l Watts at Mystic Seaport Museum) I don't know who captained the ship after him. According to the Watts records the ship was sold in Cardiff, Wales in 1872. Above information per Samuel Watts Collection (Coll.152) Mystic Seaport Museum, Mystic, Connecticut, and New York Marine Register for 1857 and American Lloyd’s Register American and Foreign Shipping (1859). There were two voyages of LDS passengers in April 1855 and April 1856. Are those the voyages you are interested in? There is a lot of documentation (online) and through the LDS church for these voyages. I can give you LDS film #s for the passenger lists, if you'd like. I have a copy of a letter from one of the LDS leaders regarding one of the voyages. I also have an informational document that was prepared for the passengers (info about when to board, what to bring, etc)and a copy of a photo of a painting of the ship. I'd be happy to answer specific questions, if I can and share the copies and information I have. Just let me know. Dianne Soares |

http://www.mainehistory.org/cgi-bin/discus/show.pl?tpc=3&post=2336#POST2336 Dianne - I am just now seeing this posting - exciting to hear from you! I am working with the great great grandson of Edward O'brien on a project on the S Curling. He has original letters from Curling to O'Brien and back. would love anything on the ceremony or day they launched the ship and first put her in the water in Thomaston. I have found many references to the ship online in articles and diaries of Mormon immigrants. How can I get in touch with you? Thanks! |
