I am currently doing an extensive study of anyone from Maine with the surname Vivian. Joseph Vivian (c.1789-1873) married Diana Wyman of Belgrade, Maine, in 1814. A review of all the deeds of Kennebec County showed that their sons William Henry and Rufus bought and sold several pieces of property in the Augusta/Belgrade area in the mid-1800's. Another son, Willard, had some Belgrade property before settling in Gloucester, Mass. I have found several Vivians in the Vassalboro area from the 1820's-1870's and am trying to connect them with Joseph. Some of the Vassalboro Vivians also settled in the Massachusetts North Shore (Gloucester & Salem), which strengthens my belief that they are related to Joseph. just a little postscipt for you, my son's name is also Joe Vivian. The family name is from Ontario Can. and my Joe was named after his Grandfather's nickname "Joe"(don't ask me why Joe as a nickname) Lawrence Vivian on his dad's side. | ||

Augusta, Maine vital records have marriage intentions of Joseph Vivian and Diana Wyman for August 27, 1814 and the marriage of William H. and Sarah N. Decker of Alna, Maine on (int..December 22, 1860). William appears to have lost Caroline (Page), his first wife on May 7, 1859. He appears alone in the 1860 federal census as a carpenter. He and his wife lost three children at young ages in Augusta between May, 1850 and April 1851. Lizzie C. reportedly married W. W. Hutchinson of Appleton, Wis. on 2-24-1877. Joseph at 79 was living with William and his family in 1870 Augusta for the census and Jospeh died January 9, 1873, age 84. Rufus married Sarah and lived in 1860 and 1870 Augusta as per census data. Hannah Gaslin (listed as 75 in both 1860 and 1870) lived with them as did Ellen Lord, age 9 in 1860. |
