I am aware of the marriage of William Gillis and Maria Mitchell in Bath on 20 February, 1851 by Reverend W. F. Farrington. The record is on the LDS site and the Asst. City Clerk at Bath has provided the Reverend's name. She says, "Unfortunately our record start in 1892, there was a fire and all the previous records were distroyed. This information was copied from information gathered from a local Church." I am trying to determine what church to contact for a copy of the marriage record. Also, if this is the couple who I believe it to be, their son, Benjamin Warren Gillis, is reported as being born in Portland on later documents and on his marraige record in particular where he is listed as 21 years of age, born in Portland Maine (the marriage is dated 1 November, 1872). This puts his birth likely in 1851. Any thoughts on where I might locate his birth or baptismal record would be helpful as well. |
