Preparing for a visit:

How can we prepare students for their visit to Maine Historical Society?

With your confirmation email, you will receive a set of suggested pre-visit and post-visit lessons and activities that you can complete with your students. There is also an orientation video of the MHS campus available on our website in the Education section. If you have any questions about the content of these lessons or would like assistance in creating content designed especially for your students' needs, please contact Manager of Education and Interpretive Programs Kathleen Neumann at 207-774-1822, ext. 214 or email kneumann@mainehistory.org.

Scheduling a visit:

Whom do we contact to schedule a field trip?

To schedule a field trip or request information about curriculum and educational programming content, please contact Manager of Education and Interpretive Programs Kathleen Neumann at 207-774-1822, ext. 214 or email kneumann@mainehistory.org. We will need to know the date and time you'd like to visit, which education programs you would like to schedule, how many students, teachers, and chaperones will be participating, the name of your school, and the grade level(s) of the participating students. When leaving a message, please include your phone number and email address. Allow 2-3 business days for a reply. Additionally, it is recommended that you review the visit rules and expectations with students; these are also included with your confirmation email and are available on the website.

When should I book my field trip to Maine Historical Society?

The fall and spring are the best times to visit Maine Historical Society. Programs for the spring are in high demand and available dates fill up quickly. If you want to visit in April, May, or June, you should plan to book your field trip in January or February.

We may be able to accommodate you at other times throughout the year. Contact Manager of Education and Interpretive Programs Kathleen Neumann with special requests at 207-774-1822, ext. 214 or email kneumann@mainehistory.org.

How will we receive confirmation for the date and time of our field trip?

Once your field trip is scheduled, you will receive a confirmation email from the Manager of Education and Interpretive Programs.

Visit logistics:

How many people can we bring to Maine Historical Society on a field trip?

While we do our best to welcome groups of all sizes, and while there is no minimum number of visitors required for school groups, the maximum group size we can accommodate for educational programming is 50 individuals (including teachers and chaperones).

For groups with more than 50 visitors, we recommend splitting your field trip over more than one day. Maine Historical Society may be able to help defer your travel costs with our bus subsidy program; learn more and download an application.

Where do we go on the day of our visit? What will happen when we arrive?

Our campus is located at 489 Congress Street; students can be dropped off and picked up in front of our main building and the Wadsworth-Longfellow House. A bus pulloverĀ is located at 511 Congress Street, just half a block from the front of our campus and in front of the Maine International Trade Center. Please be advised that public transportation vehicles also use this pullover and there is a 15 minute boarding/deboarding time limit. There is no parking available on the Maine Historical Society campus. Public parking is available in the parking garages on Brown Street and Cumberland Avenue.

Upon arrival, museum education staff will meet you at the front door of the Museum Store and escort your students inside the main building for orientation and instructions. In the event that orientation space in the main building is unavailable, orientation will take place in front of the main building and the Wadsworth-Longfellow House.

Where do we submit payment the day of our visit?

You can pay at the counter in the Museum Store. It is usually best to designate one adult to settle payment in the store upon arrival while students begin their orientation. Payment is due the day of your visit; checks should be made out to Maine Historical Society.

Program/admission prices

Can Maine Historical Society send us an invoice so that we don't have to worry about payment the day of our visit?

Yes! You can ask to be invoiced when scheduling your tour or, if you forget, on the day of your visit. We will need your contact information, the name of your school, and the number of students and chaperones participating in the field trip for the invoice.

Is there a place to store coats, bags, and other belongings?

Maine Historical Society has a coat room with space to store coats, mittens, hats, etc. The coat room is also equipped with lockers to securely store valuables. Backpacks and large bags are not allowed inside the Wadsworth-Longfellow House or Brown Research Library.

Where are the restrooms at Maine Historical Society?

Our restrooms are located inside our main building, in the hallway just beyond our lecture hall and exhibit gallery. Maine Historical Society's restrooms are fully accessible and always available for visiting groups, but please be advised that they are small. Large groups with many individuals asking to use the restrooms at the same time may delay programming; please plan accordingly.

Can we take photographs at Maine Historical Society?

Yes! Photography for personal and non-commercial use is allowed everywhere on the MHS campus, unless otherwise posted. Photographing of library materials is subject to library staff approval. Video recording and use of flash are not permitted in the Wadsworth-Longfellow House or exhibit galleries. Always consult your school and district policies concerning photographs of students before taking and distributing/sharing photographs of your visit.

Will there be time during our visit for students to have lunch/snack? Is there a place on the MHS campus where students can eat their lunch/snack?

If you would like to build time into your program for lunch or a snack, please inform the Manager of Education when scheduling your visit. While food and drink are permitted in the lecture hall and Longfellow Garden, those spaces must be reserved ahead of time to ensure their availability and this time must be built into your visit schedule. Food and drink are not permitted in the exhibit galleries, the Wadsworth-Longfellow House, or the Brown Research Library.

Is Maine Historical Society fully accessible?

All of our facilities are wheelchair accessible, with the exception of the 2nd floor of the Wadsworth-Longfellow House; a video tour of the 2nd floor is available upon request. The lower level of the Longfellow Garden is fully accessible through the Brown Library during library hours of operation, Tuesday-Saturday, 10am to 4pm.

What should we do if we are running late the day of our visit?

Delays happen and are often unavoidable (traffic, weather, etc.). We can almost always adjust your scheduled program as needed if you are running late, but it helps if you let us know as soon as you can. Please call the MHS Museum Store at 207-774-1822, ext. 208 to report any delays.
