Library Renovation Information

MHS has begun the renovation and expansion of its Research Library! Normal operations with full library services and access to our collections are being provided at an interim location just down the block and across the street from the old location—in the CVS building at 510 Congress Street (see map below).

Designed by Alexander Longfellow, a prominent Maine architect and nephew of the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, the Library was built in 1907 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The renovation will not alter the historic character of the building, but will update and transform the Library into a state–of–the–art research facility, and will lead to better care of our collections.

Construction on the $9 million project is underway and is expected to take sixteen months, with anticipated completion in the spring of 2009.

We look forward to re–opening the renovated MHS Library again in its old location at 485 Congress Street in the spring of 2009 with a new wing, much needed additional storage space, and restored garden. Help move the project forward.

The temporary library space is located at 510 Congress Street.
