The center of the city—the "heart" of the retail and commercial district—is downtown. It's the place where business activities are concentrated and where stores of all types and sizes can be found. It's the scope of this commercial activity that defines a city.

Downtown: Portland, circa 1912 displayed photographs that provided an interesting comparison with the same streets we walk today. The photographs captured businesses, buildings, and the hustle and bustle of Congress Street 100 years ago. Rooflines, window configurations, architectural details, street numbers, and sometimes, something as simple as a fence, offer reminders for today's city goers of downtown Portland, circa 1912.
