Maine Historical Society receives TripAdvisor Award

PORTLAND, ME – Maine Historical Society (MHS) has recently been awarded the 2014 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for exceptional tours of the Wadsworth-Longfellow House. This prestigious award signifies that MHS has consistently earned outstanding feedback from TripAdvisor travelers, based on the quality of reviews and opinions shared online in the last year.

Recent visitors to MHS have shared these comments about the childhood home of America’s beloved poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow:

"I can't believe I've never visited the house where one of Maine's greatest literary figures, and world-renowned personality grew up. The Maine Historical Society, which owns and maintains the house, has done a remarkable job preserving the authenticity of a home built in 1785. It is the oldest standing home on the Portland peninsula. Not only is the house an amazing connection to Portland's past, but the abundance of docents, willing to answer questions provide an opportunity to learn about the inhabitants and history of the house." Avery K., Portland, ME, December 2013

"Our tour of the House was informative, entertaining and enlightening. Our guide expertly described in detail some of Longfellow's childhood experiences in the 1790's home, complete with original furnishings and decor. The architecture, authentic artifacts, especially Longfellow's writing desks and the period furniture, were so impressive. The serene atmosphere helped us pay rapt attention to the narration in every room and passage through the intimate home." Linda W., Murray, KY, October 2013

The Wadsworth-Longfellow House is open May-October, and offers daily guided tours Monday-Saturday, 10AM-5PM, and Sunday 12 Noon-5PM; the last tour leaves at 4PM. Admission: $8 Adults; $7 Students with IDs, Seniors, and AAA Members; Children $3. MHS Members and children under the age of 6 are free.
