Maine Historical Society Launches Online Storytelling Portal for Individual Contributors

January 25, 2017

Maine Historical Society (MHS) is proud to announce the launch of My Maine Stories (mainememory.net/mymainestories), Maine’s first participatory storytelling portal for the personal stories of Maine’s residents and those who love Maine. Through a National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museums and Library Services (IMLS), MHS has expanded Maine Memory Network (MMN) to include individual contributors for the first time; previously only collecting institutions could submit to MMN. Maine Memory Network (mainememory.net) is Maine’s digital museum, hosting over 70,000 records submitted by 270 partners across the state.

My Maine Stories is an online storytelling forum where anyone can tell their story about Maine with text, video, audio and photographs. This platform is an opportunity for MHS to provide resources for anyone, anywhere, to contribute their story, with their own words, in the comfort of their homes. Story topics may be historic or contemporary, and might include a person’s experiences in Maine, memories of their family, ancestors, or town; work life, or impacts of a historical event. Once posted, the stories are catalogued for easy searching online, and preserved on MMN’s digital archive for educational purposes, future research and general information.

Through the individual stories of everyday Mainers, My Maine Stories increases MHS’s reach to established and new audiences across Maine, and helps to diversify the perspectives and voices of Maine history.
