Celebrating the 175th Anniversary of Westbrook College
In celebration of the 175th Anniversary of Westbrook College, the Maine Historical Society Research Library has dedicated the lobby exhibit space to highlighting its collections related to the history of Westbrook College and its graduates. The rich history of Westbrook College, now the University of New England, incorporates three towns, countless graduates and nearly two centuries of education. One of Westbrook College's most famous graduates, Lillian M.N. Stevens is featured in the exhibit, describing her study at Westbrook College, her work with the Woman's Christian Temperance Union and her socio–political career.
Lauren Webster, the exhibit's curator, is a graduate student from the American and New England Studies Program at the University of Southern Maine and is currently an intern here at the MHS Library. Lauren's thoughtful incorporation of ephemera, photographs, yearbooks and printed matter demonstrate the multifarious history of the college, highlighting Mrs. Stevens' work in the Temperance movement. The exhibit features objects from Collection 2093, The Dr. Charles Burden Temperance Collection at the Maine Historical Society, as well as additional objects from the libraries collections.
The Maine Historical Society would like to congratulate Westbrook College/UNE for its continued work in providing students from Maine, the United States and abroad with quality education and wish the University equal, if not greater success in the future. Please visit the exhibit at the Maine Historical Society Research Library, Tuesdays through Saturdays 10am to 4pm (holidays excepted), through the end of December 2006. For inquires pertaining to specific exhibit objects or additional materials related to the College and its graduates, please see the reference staff.
