Trip Description
Enjoy a truly unique experience as Maine Historical Society cruises for 14 days on Uniworld's River Countess through Italy.
Select an option: Take the 14-day excursion that explores the beauty and magic of Rome and the Chianti region of Tuscany, followed by seven days aboard Uniworld's River Countess sailing from Venice to the heart of Italy along the Po River or meet the Group in Venice and take only the Ro River Cruise portion of the trip.
Join us as we see Rome like you may have never seen it before, explore the beauty and magic of the Chianti region of Tuscany, followed by seven days on the River Countess exploring Venice and the heart of Italy along the Po River. Eric Baxter from AAA Northern New England and a MHS Trustee will once again serve as your escort throughout trip.
The land portion of our trip (3 days Rome, 3 days Tuscany) was designed exclusively for Maine Historical Society. This means we will not be sharing the coach with anyone and can adjust the details of the trip to meet the group's desires insuring a relaxing pace with plenty of free time!
Highlights of Rome include our 5 star hotel, the Boscolo Excedra and a fascinating tour of the Appain Way, the underground catacombs and Rome's remaining aqueducts. Other highlights include a 4 hour tour-Arte Vaticana—led by a PH.D. art historian and a fabulous dinner at a rooftop restaurant with magnificent views of Rome.
Our next stop is the Tuscan walled city of Siena, but not before stopping at Castello Verrazzano in the heart of the Chianti hills for a wine tasting and a Tuscan lunch. Staying in a restored 18th century villa, we will explore the treasures of Siena and the wonders of UNESCO World Heritage site San Gimignano and its fourteen 13th century towers.
Venice is our final destination. We'll board the beautiful Uniworld River Countess which will be our accommodations for the next seven days. During that time we will spend 2 days in Venice and then sailing the Po River into the heart of Italy, we will visit Padua, Ravenna, Bologna and Verona. These wonderful city visits offer a unique glimpse at places off the beaten path yet rich with history. Before our trip home, we will spend one last day in Venice.
