Giving Tuesday: Your Gift Can Help Save History

This #GivingTuesday help support the Brown Research Library's Historic Newspaper Collection. A gift of just $20.00 will purchase a custom newspaper box and help preserve one of Maine’s hidden treasures.

With the changing world of newspaper publication, Maine Historical Society's historic newspaper collection stands an important example of Maine's robust publishing history. Beginning in 1785 with the Falmouth Gazette, Maine has an impressive legacy in the newspaper realm. MHS' collections specialize in 18th and 19th century titles from around Maine, including rare, obscure and specialty titles found few other places in the United States. The delicate nature of these collections, especially those printed after the Civil War, require tremendous care. Coupled with their often over-sized format, remaining committed to original newspapers can be complex.

Despite digital access to numerous Maine titles, the many of the newspapers at Maine Historical Society cannot be found online, on microfilm, and in some instances, anywhere else in original form. Despite ever increasing online access, our library is committed to retaining originals. Nothing ever compares to an original.

This project seeks to provide archival boxes for loose newspaper issues, which are prone to crumble and disintegrate with age. Supporting this project allows MHS to provide a permanent home to this vital aspect of Maine history. Donate now and help make MHS’ #GivingTuesday a success!
