Making Maine's History Count
Founded in 1822, the Maine Historical Society is the third oldest state historical society in the United States, established just after Maine separated from Massachusetts.
Today, it is recognized on both the state and national level as a leading cultural institution and the primary steward of Maine's historical heritage. Your support is an investment in the people, programs, facilities and activities necessary for MHS to fulfill its mission of preserving history, engaging minds, and connecting Maine.
Mission Statement: The Maine Historical Society preserves the heritage and history of Maine: the stories of Maine people, the traditions of Maine communities, and the record of Maine’s place in a changing world. Because an understanding of the past is vital to a healthy and progressive society, we collect, care for, and exhibit historical treasures; facilitate research into family, local, state, and national history; provide education programs that make history meaningful, accessible, and enjoyable; and empower others to help preserve and interpret the history of our state.

MHS Research Library Renovation and Expansion Campaign
Your gift will help renovate the 1907 library and build a new wing to provide better care and more storage for our library collections.

Become a member and support MHS as you enjoy a rich schedule of exhibitions and programs that explore Maine history.

The daily operations of the MHS Library, MHS Museum, Wadsworth–Longfellow House, Maine Memory Network, and educational offerings including lectures and school programs depend upon the essential support of our members and friends through gifts to the Annual Fund every year.
