Dividing the Faith: The Rise of Segregated Churches in the Early American North
- a book talk with Richard Boles

Recorded on March 4, 2021

In his book Dividing the Faith: The Rise of Segregated Churches in the Early American North, historian Richard Boles draws from the records of over four hundred religious congregations, including collections at Maine Historical Society, to scrutinize factors which made varied Christian traditions either accessible or inaccessible to African American, Afro-Indian, and American Indian peoples. Boles presents new scholarly research, arguing that while a significant portion of northern Protestants worshiped in interracial contexts during the eighteenth century, such affiliations became increasingly rare as churches by-and-large segregated in the nineteenth century. This research breaks new ground and uses patterns of church participation to illuminate broader social histories. Overall, Boles' research explores the dynamic history of racial integration and segregation in northern colonies and states.
