Maine State Historian Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr. examined the word of five of the women artists featured in his book A Century of Portland Artists, 1820 – 1920. The book profiles twenty-three painters through brief biographies and examples of their pictures found in the Society's collection. This talk focused on the work and the careers of Maria Beckett, Harriet Cammett, Mary King Longfellow, Elizabeth Murray, and Anna Skillings. Through their oil paintings, watercolors, and sketches, these five talented women made significant contributions to the cultural life of nineteenth century Portland.
