Gerald Dickens Returns to Perform A CHRISTMAS CAROL the Literary Classic Written by His Great-Great Grandfather Charles Dickens
November 14, 2018
Portland, Maine: Back by popular demand for the second consecutive year, Maine Historical Society will present A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens – as performed by the author’s great-great grandson, Gerald Charles Dickens. Start your holiday season by re-living this literary classic in a fresh, masterful performance in Portland's historic First Parish Church on Monday, November 26 at 7:00 pm.
Hailing from Oxford, England, actor and producer Gerald Dickens is touring his performance which is offered in the spirit of Charles Dickens’ 1867 tour of the United States, where he delivered his literary works before spellbound audiences. Historians report that A Christmas Carol was Charles Dickens’ favorite piece to perform.
In his energetic one-man show, Gerald Dickens conjures A Christmas Carol with limited props. As he leaps, sobs and laughs, creating different postures and voices for each person, all 26 characters of the classic tale are brought to life with such adroitness that the audience has no doubt who is who.
“This show was so well-received last year that we had to invite Mr. Dickens back. It’s a rare and wonderful opportunity for families and adults of all ages to welcome the holidays in with such a creative interpretation of this beloved classic. And the fact that Gerald Dickens is the great-great-grandson of Charles Dickens (who was also good friends with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow) adds an amazing depth of authenticity and provenance to the story,” says Steve Bromage, Maine Historical Society Executive Director.
The performance will be held at the First Parish Church in Portland, converging historic significance to Maine, and the Longfellow family. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is one of the oldest church structures in the City, and one of the finest examples of Federal period architecture. First Parish Church was also the church of the Longfellow family. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Charles Dickens first met in 1842 and for the rest of their lives they nurtured a supportive friendship through numerous letters and visits on both sides of the Atlantic.
Gerald Dickens’ performance is produced by Byers’ Choice Ltd., makers of the nationally-known Carolers® and Kindles® figurines. His performance is locally sponsored by O’Donal’s Nursery.
