Gift two hours of research to a family member or friend!

Maine Historical Society offers various categories of research, such as family history, Maine local history, domestic architecture, and images. See below for details.

If you have a simple reference question, such as "When did Maine become a state?" or "Do you have Longfellow: Poems and Other Writings in your collection?" then please use the Ask A Librarian form. Library staff will determine if your question qualifies as our free ready–reference service, or if you should consider our fee–based research services. We will contact you before beginning any research.

Quick Search

Request a "quick search" for the answer to a specific question using the online research request form. We will spend 15 minutes or less to search our available sources.

Example: Does a Frances Murray, born 1900, appear in the 1930 census of Lewiston?

In–Depth Research

Request research for open–ended questions using the online research request form. We will search available sources and provide you with a written report of the findings.

Example: My great-grandfather was living in Eastport in 1850. Can you tell me his siblings and parents?

Reference Reproduction Service

Request reference quality reproductions (photocopy/PDF) from a known source (which you identify). Copyright, condition and other considerations may prevent reproducing entire books or original manuscripts.

Reference reproductions are sent as a PDF and are low-resolution scans suitable for research purposes. For information on high-resolution or publication quality reproductions, please see our Image Services page.

Currently there are two reference reproduction options:

Standard Scanning Request

Example: Please send me pages 164 through 175 from The Libby Family in America.

Scan on Demand

Example: Please send me all pages in Coll. 1600: box 3, folder 6.

Note: The flat rate $20.00 fee is for each group of 25 pages. For example, 23 pages is $20; 37 pages is $40.

Image Research

The Maine Historical Society has over 140,000 photographs in its collection. Most are available for photographic or digital reproductions for publication or personal display. Search for selected images. If you are looking for an item that does not appear on that site, contact us to request a photo search.

Genealogical Research Consulting

Request personal consultation on how to begin your research, how to get past a brick wall you have encountered, or suggestions for further research sources. Sit down with one of our staff or a professional researcher for a private consultation. Please contact staff for current availability.

Online Resources and Membership

You may find the manuscript or photograph that you need on the Maine Memory Network, Vintage Maine Images or through our Museum Collections Database. Become an MHS Member before submitting a request and receive a 10% discount.

Payment and time tracking

Research requests are completed in the order they are received, however, photocopy requests or Quick-Searches may be fulfilled ahead of in-depth queries. Once the request is completed, an invoice will be provided. Upon receipt of payment, MHS research staff will send the final product via email (or mail if preferred).

MHS takes the following forms of payment: MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Discover. Those who wish to pay by check should contact the staff for exact amounts prior to sending in payment, or be prepared to send additional funds if needed. Payment must be received in full prior to MHS release of content.

Delivery and Postage

All research requests will be answered through email (with PDF attachments) unless hard copy is specifically requested. We will keep a copy of your research report on file. Depending on the number of pages, you may be charged a minimal digitization and/or postage charge.

Due to an increased volume of research requests, please allow 6 to 8 weeks for a reply. Patrons with specific deadlines should contact the research staff at
